Robert Otto (US State Dept Russian intel official) thinks Michael McFaul fabricated story about his phone conversations getting leaked online by Russia

A U.S. State Dept Russian Intelligence official, Bob Otto's, e-mails were hacked and leaked online. (Source)

Download links for the e-mails are available here in 3 parts.

Here's what is basically just a lead for a story. I'm not 100% sure that this is what the e-mails are about, it may be something else McFaul said, but given the context this seems right.

McFaul Claims Russia leaked his phone conversations

Back in February, 2014, U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, stated that the Russians had tapped his phone and leaked his conversations online. (Source)

I think this claim is what these e-mails are referring to. I haven't found any references to a "website" anywhere — it could be something he said at a public speaking event or elsewhere.

Bob Otto questions McFaul's claims in conversation with journalist Kevin Rothrock

Here's the two e-mail chains where this comes up:

First, Otto states he's skeptical it ever occurred:

frolov please — call me skeptical on amb – i don't think the incident occurred.

In a later e-mail, Kevin Rothrock agrees:

I share your skepticism about McFaul's claim. If, in his book, he stays as vague as "websites," it will be rather embarrassing.

and Bob Otto replies:

Worse: he’s making it up. Completely.

Now, it would be trivial for McFaul to prove he didn't make up the leak; all he has to do is provide a link or archive of the website where his conversation was posted.

On the other hand, if McFaul can't provide the link, it further reduces his credibility when it comes to Russia and the subject of leaks.

Keep in mind, McFaul has already been involved in some shady propaganda shit, like the Washington Post's PropOrNot article.

I've barely scratched the surface of this e-mail dump, it's 1.5 GB total and there may be some juicy stuff hidden in here.
